Dr. Stephanie Hardenburg, MA, PhD, LPC, CSOTP, LMFT

CURRENT: As the founder and owner of Counseling and Forensic Services Inc., a Virginia based corporation that she established in 2000, Dr. Stephanie Hardenburg’s reputation and professionalism have exceeded industry standards.  Along with an active and full caseload, including the management of multiple groups (including but not limited to sex offender groups, women’s groups, parenting classes, and groups for military families and veterans), Dr. Hardenburg is also responsible for the supervision of graduate-level interns and full/part time employees that make up the six branch offices of CFS; including locations in Woodbridge, Leesburg, Alexandria, Warrenton, Hopewell, and Emporia.  Included in her role as managing director, Dr. Hardenburg offers specialized education and training to her staff in the areas of marriage and family issues, as well as treatment and rehabilitation for registered sex offenders.  Dr. Hardenburg practices in the Woodbridge office.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, and ACCOLADES:  Dr. Hardenburg earned her doctorate (PhD.) degree in Counseling from George Mason University, where she previously completed a masters degree in Clinical Psychology, during which time she was awarded the prestigious “Outstanding Graduate Student in Psychology” honor.  As a testament to her education and skills, Dr. Hardenburg was subsequently hired at George Mason University as a professor in the counseling department, for which she taught several classes.  She went on to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and a Certified Sexual Offender Treatment Provider (CSOTP) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  She is also an approved supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family therapy.  During her training, Dr. Hardenburg also studied at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy to learn unique forensic and assessment skills.   She utilized this unique skillset as an instrumental asset in the formation of a pilot project that offers therapy to adult sex offenders.  After 12 years of service for Prince William County, which included work for the Department of Social Services and the Community Services Board, Dr. Hardenburg was presented with a county commendation plaque from the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, specifically related to her work with adolescents, families, and dually diagnosed clients. 

PUBLICATIONS and PRESENTATIONS:  Throughout her 25 years of committed service, Dr. Hardenburg has published numerous articles on solution-focused group therapy, counseling of children, and articles dealing with diagnostic subject matter.  A highlight of which included a publication entitled, “Solution 'Focused Group in Case Studies, Australia, and A Big Horrible Blob called Confusion: Solution Focused work with a child with stomach problems”.  Additionally, Dr. Hardenburg imparted a strong hand in the editing of two counseling books by Dr. Linda Seligman.  Along with Dr. Seligman and in addition to her publication experience, Dr. Hardenburg co-authored an article (“Diagnosis of Paraphilias”) for the Journal of Counseling and Development.  Furthermore, she has been a presenter for the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).  She has also been invited to be a speaker at the annual Virginia Sexual Offender Treatment conference.

Michael Kuhns, LPC, CSOTP

Michael Kuhns has been with CFS since 2002 and is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider in the state of Virginia. In addition to working with individuals with sexual behavior problems, he enjoys working with individuals and couples in an outpatient setting. He has worked with juveniles over the course of his career and also provides Christian counseling services upon request. Michael regularly conducts both mental health and risk evaluations, and provides supervision to some staff members. He attended Cedarville University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Psychology. He then attended Georgia State University and Richmont Graduate University where he earned a Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling and a Master of Science degree in Christian Psychological Studies. While studying at Georgia State, Michael completed his internship with Dr. Gene Abel at Behavioral Medicine Institute of Atlanta. It was there that he developed a passion for working with individuals with sexual behavior problems.

Melissa Renner, LPC, CSOPT

Melissa Renner is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider in the state of Virginia. She graduated from Barton College in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice/Criminology and a specialization in Forensic Science. She graduated magna cum laude in 2007 with a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and another in Community Counseling from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.  Melissa has a strong interest in forensic science and criminology, and utilizes this interest in her current work with offenders. In addition, she spent six months as an intern with VanGuard Services, in Arlington, Virginia, working with people suffering from substance abuse. Since January 2007, Melissa has been a counselor and group facilitator for CFS, and facilitates relapse prevention groups in multiple districts. In addition, Melissa has been working with individual adults and juveniles, as well as couples and families, with a multitude of problems since 2006. Theoretically, Melissa utilizes cognitive-behavioral, solution focused, and systemic forms of counseling.  Melissa provides services in our Woodbrige, Alexandria, and Warrenton offices.

Shiden Sarmadi, LCP

Shideh Sarmadi is a Licensed Professional Counselor experienced in variety of mental health settings including Outpatient, Inpatient, emergency Services and Psychiatric research. Her 10 years of experience in outpatient therapy includes Infant Mental Health, Child, Adolescents and Adults, in individual and group settings as well as couples counseling.  She has earned her bachelor degree in Psychology in 1998 and her Master’s degree in community counseling in 2002 from University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Shideh enjoys working in mental health environment with a focus on patient recovery and welfare. Her 15 years of experience in this field in a wide age range and command of two languages have enabled her to effectively understand and relate to clients with multi-cultural background.  Shiden provides service in the Woodbridge office.

Tamara Powell, LCSW, CSOTP

Tamara Powell obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Boston University. She then attended Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with a Masters of Social Work. She has been serving the needs of individuals and families in Virginia for over five years. She is a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider, a licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). She specializes in working with sex offenders, children, and families.  Tamara provides services in our Woodbridge office.

Donna Davis, LMFT

Donna S. Davis is a Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in the states of Virginia and North Carolina. She received her Master of Arts degree in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Donna has experience working with children, adolescents and adults in a variety of settings including office, schools and day treatment. Due to spending 20 years as a military spouse Donna is especially interested in working with couples and families on issues related to the military lifestyle. She provides services at the Woodbridge office.

LeNelle Mozell, LCSW

LeNelle M. Mozell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who has been practicing in the social services field for more than 20 years.  A native of North Carolina, LeNelle received her Bachelor's degree from Duke University (Go Blue Devils!!!) and moved to Boston, MA after graduation.  She worked with children with severe emotional and behavioral problems for 9 years, in a substantially-separate school setting as well as in short-term residential settings.  After deciding to finally get a degree in the field she loves, she received her Masters in Social Work in 2003 from the Simmons School of Social Work in Boston, MA.  LeNelle practiced with substance abuse clients for four years post-graduation while also doing private practice work with children.  In 2007, LeNelle decided to return to a more southerly locale and moved to Virginia.  She began working as a Homeless Shelter Director in Arlington, VA and within a year, transitioned to the Substance Abuse Program Director within the same facility.  LeNelle began PT private practice work in Manassas, VA in 2009 at Counseling Services of Manassas, Inc.  When that practice closed in October 2015, she joined Counseling and Forensics Services.  She practices in our Woodbridge location.

Kaitlyn Nugent

Kaitlyn Nugent is working toward licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor and toward her certification as a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider in the state of Virginia.  She graduated from University of Georgia in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in Sociology.  She graduated in 2015 with two Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.  She completed her internship at Counseling and Forensic Services and became an employee in May 2015.  During her time at CFS, she has worked with children, adolescents, and adults as well as couples.  Additionally, she facilitates Anger Management groups and co-facilitates relapse prevention groups.   Kaitlyn works out of the Woodbridge office.

Brian S. Vaughan

Brian S. Vaughan is working toward licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor and toward his certification as a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider in the state of Virginia.  Brian received his Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.  He also earned a Master’s Degree in Divinity from Christ the King Seminary as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from the University of Scranton. Brian has experience working with adults, adolescents, children, families and couples. He currently facilitates a treatment group for adolescent sex offenders. Madalyn Humphreys, CSOTP

Madalyn Humphreys is a Resident with Counseling and Forensic Services, Inc. currently working toward licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor.  She received her certification as a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider in June 2016. Madalyn earned her Undergraduate Degree in Psychology and her Minor in Criminal Justice at Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2011. She then attended The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, DC Campus and earned her Master's Degree in Forensic Psychology in July of 2014. Madalyn completed her internship with Counseling and Forensic Services, Inc. at that time and was hired as an employee with the company. She currently facilitates several court mandated Anger Management and Substance Abuse Groups for the Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) in Prince William County as well as facilitates Phase I Sex Offender Treatment in our Woodbridge office. She co-facilitates Phase II Sex Offender Treatment Groups in Fredericksburg and Alexandria, VA as well as conducts Evaluations for Domestic Violence Treatment.
